The Mens 4s hosted High Wycome 2s on Saturday and we were undone by a better combination of youth and experience as our guests ran out 3-1 winners. Wycombe as a club seem to be on the up again as their 1s sit on top of Regional Div 1 and I can hark back to their glory days playing on their immaculate sloping grass pitch at the cricket ground against such legends as Aston Wright and Les McCready. Having scraped past Marlow the previous week, we were fortified by the gnarly veterans Ed Baldock and Jules Easterbrook and the team started well enough, pressing hard in the first ten minutes, before the sheer pace of Wycombe’s two nippy central players undid us. We’d already had a few scares before some slick finishing resulted in an unassailable 3-0 lead within the space of ten minutes. Brett was hampered by a dodgy finger and the skipper with a poor knee, but Wycombe were in truth too quick and skilful in this period and were lucky to survive with no further goals by half time. A few home truths at the break and we restarted with more determination and created several chances, although Wycombe always looked dangerous on the break. Luke Piper again scored after playing ping pong with the keeper and if only we could have got another, it might have been interesting. 3-1 then the final score and already this league looks a tougher proposition than last year. We just need to get our balance right and we’ll be fine.
