U18 Boys lose narrowly at Surbiton

02 October 2016

U18 Boys 3 - 4 Surbiton U18 Boys

The first fixture of the season is always a test but a game away at the mighty Surbiton is a proper test at any stage of the season.

The majority of the team available for Sunday were made up of those stepping up from last year’s u16’s with a core of old hands to give stability. Hawks knew it was going to be a tough game and a hasty pre match talk from Dunners set the tone and key tactical points.  Hawks took the game to Surbiton and an early lead and at half time we were 2-1 up.  In the 2nd half Surbiton upped the pace and Hawks tired in the afternoon sun. Dunners and I thought it was a great team performance and we adapted well to the pace and physicality of the game.  It was really pleasing to see that everyone had given their all in the game. Oli Lovibond had a great game at inside forward showing positive attacking play and commitment in defence.  Robbie Scragg made some great runs with commitment (or over commitment) in the tackle which earnt him a green card…..  It was really good though to see the forward line producing the goods with 3 well worked goals from Will Senior/ Charlie Taylor and Joe Roads and excellent work from Freddie Sunderland at inside and Oli Honeyman down the wings. The back was marshalled by Fergus Dunleavy in goal with Charlie Stoker and Archie Spittles in the back line.  Ned Gordon, Harry Venables, John Black and Thomas Edmiston  filled various positions in the middle and back and subbed quickly and efficiently.

So an encouraging start to the season and we proved we can hold our own against one of the top teams in the country and we know we have some areas to improve on……
