Girls under 14s dominate Oxford with sparkling 8-1 win

02 October 2016

U14 Girls A 8 - 1 Oxford U14 Girls

The u14s started their season with a terrific 8-1 win at Oxford HC at Headington School on Sunday. However, the scoreline didn’t accurately reflect the evenness of the match – at least for the first 40 minutes. Hawks had a few new faces in their line up, including Tilly Mobley, Tallulah W-M and Emily Cassidy in goal joining the club and definitely strengthening the team. The first half was a pretty even affair with Hawks having the majority of possession, but lacking quality in the final pass, and Oxford looking increasingly dangerous on the break. Tilly and Emma were very effective marauding down the right, whilst Tiggy made some nice runs down the left channel and Alice showed the benefits of playing adult hockey with some solid defensive play; the experienced Susie and Annabelle helped Caitie at the back, who understandably showed a few nerves having not played there before! Oxford pegged Hawks back after we scored early on with a breakaway goal and looked likely to score again, Emily being called into action on several occasions. However, once Gemma got into the game, she started to dictate play and Hawks pulled away. 3-1 at half time, Hawks moved through the gears and scored three times in the first ten minutes after the restart, notably with a lovely ‘ping pong’ short corner finished off by Gemma. Oxford never gave up, much to their credit, as Hawks ran out easy winners, but there is plenty to work on for Coach Lisa (and Abi F). Two hat-tricks for Gemma (voted MoM by the oppo) and Tilly, with deserved additional goals from Emma S and Mimi. A great start to the season.
