Slow start leads to success for Ladies' 5s

01 October 2016, 10:30, Banbury Road North (Top)

Ladies' 5s 5 - 1 Bicester Ladies' 2s

It was a different team from last week that gathered in the changing rooms. New players Mel, Annika and Caitlin were welcomed as well as a return by Evelyn in goal. All were to prove their worth as the match unfolded. But the first thing to do was to learn names and understand positions.

It took 10 minutes for the team to settle down. By that time, we were a goal down and needed to catch up. An unfortunate head injury to one of the opposition defenders gave Susan a chance to muster the team and reinvigorated we started to put pressure on Bicester. Sherene scored the first goal in the 16th minute, a sweet direct sweep, as only Sherene can, into the corner of the goal, beating the keepers outstretched foot.

It wasn't long before we gained the lead due to a piece of composed stick work by Annika through a maze of players in the D and somehow into the goal through a gap between the keeper and the post. Continued pressure then led to a series of unconverted short corners just before the half time whistle,

A constructive team talk at half time and the team were determined to continue to improve in the second half. And so they did. The next quarter saw the team linking well together. Jane impressed, intercepting and distributing down the right. In the 7th minute a move led to a pass from Mel to Sherene who finished on her reverse. Confidence up it was only 3 minutes later that another linking move in which Holly was a key part, led to a fourth goal. Pip was on the scoresheet, and it was her strong running and vision that also led to the next goal a minute later. She carried the ball down the left touch line, past two defenders and into the circle for a shot and Sherene niftily picked up the rebound off the keeper’s pads. She had an opportunity to score a fourth from a long corner when Phil stepped up and threaded the ball through but it was not to be.

Bicester defended well and the Hawks midfield and defence also managed to counter any Bicester attacks and there was no further score in the game. It was good to see their defender return to the field for the last few minutes.

A much better second half and a first win of the league season for the 5s, Sherene's  hat trick earned her MOM and the honour of baking for next week and top scorer in the club!

Thanks to the umpires who controlled the game with a calm efficiency.
