The second match in our weekend double header saw the 3’s take on Newbury after a rainy defeat the day before.
Not wanting a weekend of losses, the team started strong but failed to convert play into a goal. However, having played together on the Saturday, we seemed to join passes together more easily and played a strong an aggressive game. A lack of concentration meant we left a player unmarked and Newbury took advantage by putting a goal past us. With a huge amount of possession, strong transfers and more skilful players, we were feeling unsettled at half time about what to do to get a goal back and then the win.
A stern talking to from Captain Lizzie and the pressure of a half time photoshoot in the goal from Clive gave us renewed momentum and we started the second half strongly. The first goal of the match was unconventional, with even the Newbury players questioning what had happened. A great run and reverse strike from the baseline by Giorgia rolled right along the backline and into the goal from the tightest of angles. The Newbury defenders and goalie had been certain the ball was going off and didn’t move, but a goal’s a goal so 1-1!
Emily Black was back from uni and used her pace and skill to quickly attack Newbury defence again with a strike from the top D to make it 2-1. Our 3rd and final goal was well deserved for Megan Sloan after a weekend of frustration from trying to get a reverse strike off! She found the backboard and led us to a convincing 3-0 which left us all looking forward to starting the season for real.
