On a beautiful September afternoon at BRN, the newly-formed Ladies 7s played the newly-formed Bicester Ladies 5s for the third consecutive week, but this was the first league game for both teams, so there were many nervous player lining up, and for our young Hawks players it was also their first ladies game. There was a squad of 16 players, so thanks to Jan Davis for thoughtfully and efficiently managing the substitutions.

The first half appeared a little frantic with both teams playing down the center of the pitch and following the ball, however Olivia and Mimi managed to score goals from open play, and Jess was successful after a unique short corner routine.

The half-time talk calm and positive to encourage use of the full width of the pitch, and the space created this would create. Taking this advice to heart the hockey in the second half was amazing with many good passing moves and great crosses, the nervousness subdued and confidence grew, and resulted in 5 more goals, 3 from Mimi and 2 from Olivia.

The final score was 8-0, and a happy Hawks team. The man-of-the match was Mimi with Olivia and Sophie also gaining votes.  This put Mimi as top scorer in the club after only one game and the team to the top of the division in the league.

Thanks must have to go to the goalkeeper, Charlotte, for playing for us after a very busy game for the Ladies 6s earlier in the day, and to Bicester 5s, the development and of confidence and ability in both teams over the past 3 games has been encouraging, so let’s hope it continues for the rest of our first season in the league.

Thanks also to Diz for lending us the shirts and suggesting the young players.  They are a credit to their coaches!
