An early start, perhaps that is why our driver nearly took out a pedestrian on a zebra crossing and then has three attempts to park!! But we arrived safely and raring to go in our first league game of the season. We were by far the better team but you have to put your chances away, which we didn’t to start with, and after Jacqui Barlow saved the first penalty corner strike on the goal line the second rattled the back of the goal for our opponents to goal 1-0 up against the run of play. I think this shocked us into action. Caz Batten scored a few minutes later with the forwards making some great runs drawing the defenders away from goal for a strike from the top of the circle to even the score. A few minutes later, Rebecca Black’s penalty corner strike was blocked by the defender only for Lexi Newall to follow up and pass the ball into the net. 2-1 at half time and some stern words were said.
Now we were familiar with the slow sand based pitch along with some interesting umpiring, the second half was dominated by Hawks. Man of the match Gemma Taylor came onto the pitch and turned the game in minutes with two fine passages of play; this culminated in Gemma’s goal from a reverse stick strike which left the goal-keeper rooted. The next goal to make it 4-1 saw some fantastic passing from Hawks, the final pass of the move found Rebecca Black to sweep the ball into the goal. Catherine Taylor started to dominate the midfield with some simple but effective passing and Hawks finished the game with a series of short corners. Rebecca Black scored her second of the day from a penalty corner strike which was soon following followed up by a penalty corner move that was slipped to Sophie Bennet who finished neatly at the far post. Top of the table after the first league game of the season and we intend to stay there!
