Wardy and Paddy's chums completed their pre season programme with a 1-1 draw against Oxford H.C.'s finest at Headington School. Hawks played some quality stuff in midfield but their woeful finishing in the circle and a decent performance by the Oxford keeper left Hawks seeking a score in the final quarter to even up the game after Oxford had gone ahead from a penalty corner in the first half.
Despite their profligacy in front of goal the Hawks young front line of Matt Janes, Josh Keeling and the talented Jack Knight caused the Oxford defence all sorts of problems with some direct and inventive interplay - but like every other Hawks player who ventured into the Oxford circle they left their brains somewhere near the halfway line. Eventually it was Knight who scored for Hawks 10 minutes from time to cap a hugely impressive display from the schoolboy.
Both midfield and defence look promising. In particular the 2's were grateful for a cameo performance from skipper and serial comic Wardy who was able to slow the frenetic pace of the game down to his more pedestrian liking until his legs finally fell off in the second half.
Altogether this was a game which the chums thought they should have won but were ultimately content to take a draw. There were many positives not least the fitness levels of the 12 Hawks and with a side likely to be bolstered by 2 or 3 players from the 1's squad the chums are nicely tee'd up for the League season..
