We had another cracking friendly against the new Bicester 5s. After last week’s win we were more confident from the first whistle, and once we’d remembered it wasn’t football (!) and not to tackle our own players (mea culpa!) we began pushing forward, allowing Kat to sweep in an early goal. The pace was good, the team communicated well and there was plenty of attacking spirit, resulting in more goals for Kat and Clare. Blanche was well in control of short corners, converting both direct hits, while the midfield was expertly managed by Sophie Dawes, with Jo managing to find space to drive up the right wing with tireless determination. Directed by new GK, ‘Pookie’, our capable defence efficiently despatched any threats against us.
The drizzle that settled in just before halftime did not dampen our spirits and we went out still hungry for goals. Bicester ramped up the pressure and repeated long balls eventually got the better of (my!) tired legs and got them on the scorecard. However, we regained possession, kept a decent shape and pressed high. My goal from top D seemed to take everyone by surprise, not least me and the celebrations continued into the clubhouse. Huge congrats to Jo, MOM for her first ever game of hockey!
This may have been a pre-season friendly, but a sense of camaraderie is building and we’re looking forward to making our win count in the league match next week...
PS. With 3 goals from 2 games Cat Powell is the top scorer in the club!
