At one stage we were in danger of having 15 players, then as the week progressed the numbers dropped to 10 before we finally confirmed a team of 11. With no subs and a likely dogged Wallingford team, the objective was to play hockey, get back into matches and enjoy ourselves regardless of the score. From the start we did better than that and were strong in the `Wallingford half for most of the first 35 minutes. Newcomers to the team. Issy, Phil, Alice and Ghazal all settled into their positions nicely and there was some impressive passing, which resulting in Sherene finding form and scoring two great goals while a lovely pass from Alice to Holly who then passed the ball across the D where Ghazal nudged the ball pass the keeper. We were under attack a little but somehow managed to scramble a defence with Cora, as ever, doing some impressive saving.
With a good lead we agreed to focus on conserving energy in the second half, making sure passes were good and accurate and that teamates were there to receive them. We started to tire soon into the second half but all the team dug deep to work together. Wallingford were certainly stronger in the second half, with 3 subs to relieve tired legs. This was evidenced by a lot more play in our half and a lovely lifted ball from one of their attackers gave them a deserved goal. We had our chances - Sherene again missing the goal by the narrowest of margins and there were a few lovely feeds into the D but no one with enough energy to capitalise on them.
Final score 3-1 and a happy team! Mention must go to Alice, Holly and Issy for a sterling 70 minutes work and congratulations to Sherene, a well deserved MoM!
