Approximately nine hours after the end of season dinner finished, a highly dedicated
group of U18 girls along with four U16s, set off early Sunday morning for their final
league game of the season. For four of them, Lucy Millington, Storm Sunderland,
Bethany Nagle and Megan Magrosky, it was also their last ever junior game for Oxford
Hawks started strongly and dominated both possession and chances for the first half of
the game. The limited number of Southgate attacks were easily dealt with by Hawks
back four of Annabel Gulliver, Emily Taylor, Eleanor Grainge and Chloe Scragg along
with Megan Magrosky in goal. Lucy Millington, Storm Sunderland and Siena Robins
always looked dangerous going forward from the midfield and Bethany Nagle, Izzy Dale-
Harris, Emma Milne and Maddie Whitwell made life difficult for the Southgate
defence. However, Hawks could not convert and it was Southgate who, against the run
of play, managed to go ahead two minutes before half time through a rare attack. Not
surprisingly, the game was perhaps slightly quieter than usual and the second half was a
more even affair. However there was still some excellent hockey including strong
performances from all four U16 players who joined the squad for this game - Emily
Taylor, Sienna Robins, Chloe Scragg and Maddie Whitwell. Southgate scored in the first
minute of the second half putting Hawks a little on the back foot and despite several
more good attacks, Hawks could not respond. Southgate scored a third leaving a final
scoreline of 3 - 0 to somewhat flatter the opposition.
Team: Megan Magrosky, Annabel Gulliver, Emily Taylor, Eleanor Grainge, Chloe Scragg,
Lucy Millington, Storm Sunderland, Siena Robbins, Maddie Whitwell, Bethany Nagle,
Emma Milne and Izzy Dale-Harris.
Goodbye and good luck from the junior section to Lucy, Storm, Bethany, Megan along
with Ella Cusack, Becca Cannon, Lyndsey White and Louisa Heathcote.
We have watched some of you progress from under 10s through into the adult teams
including the 1st XI and in some cases achieve international honours.
In the last two years, you have been part of squads that won the Home Counties U18
Premier League and reached two cup quarter finals - a fantastic achievement. For those
of you who will be moving away, we look forward to seeing the next steps you take and
obviously seeing you back at Hawks soon!
Finally, many thanks to Laura Scragg, Nadine Hunter, Sam Clark and Andy Clark for
their help with umpiring and coaching throughout the season.
