L5s in tough final match of the season
19 March 2016, 11:00, St. Edward's School
Ladies' 5s 0 - 3 Reading Ladies 3A
The team met at St Edwards for their home match against Reading, pleased that we had a GK and 2 umpires after a few frantic moments earlier in the week. From the start the game did not go well and our regular team, who had enjoyed many wins during the season did not seem to gel as normal. Poor passing and an attacking Reading team led to our conceding an early goal as the defence were overrun with Reading forwards who took advantage of an intercepted Hawks pass. The L5s responded with some great play and several opportunities in the Reading D and were unlucky not to convert some good passing into three goals, two of which hit the side goal posts and one that actually went into the goal ( a great strike by Emma), which was disallowed for being too high. Half time, we were 1-0 down.
We all knew what we needed to do in the second half but Reading continued to play well as a team, intercepting our poor passes and attacking our goal. We did have some play in return and again had opportunities in the D but just could not convert or get an accurate shot on goal. About ten minutes from the end we had agreed to go for the all or nothing attacking strategy and Susan took herself off and added another forward to see if we could score that elusive goal. Alas it was not to be and Reading found two more scoring opportunities. While the disallowed goal had dampened our spirits we had simply been outplayed by a good development team.
It was a very disappointing end to a great season where we had played so much good hockey, raising our game as the season progressed and all the team had worked and trained hard together. As expected Banbury won their game leaving us 3rd in the league and without a promotion chance - all very sad!
There were a number of contenders for MoM and Kirsty just clinched it!
