11 Ladies 2s players plus Dizzy and Kara travelled down to Brighton a bright and sunny Saturday morning. Despite the wee team, the ladies were confident they could get the result they needed.
The 2s started off really well and immediately put Brighton under pressure. For the first 5/10 minutes, it was all about the Ladies 2s however they weren't able to get that vital goal that would allow them to relax a little. Brighton created a number of attacking chances themselves and managed to convert an opportunity, giving them the 1-0 lead. However this encouraged Hawks even more and they immediately went down the other end and some great play from Lucy Aldred and Claire Werlinger provided Hawks with a short corner. Helen Nicholson calmly slotted the ball past the Brighton GK and into the bottom left hand corner. With the score 1-1 at half time, Hawks knew that they had everything to play for in the 2nd half.
Brighton started well in the 2nd half and scored their 2nd goal 5 minutes in. Brighton then got a 3rd goal fairly quickly but all 11 Hawks players were so determined to continue attacking against Brighton and were rewarded when tiny Claire scored Hawks' 2nd goal. Man of the match, April Bedford did some great defending and prevented the speedy Brighton forwards from getting into the Hawks D on a number of occasions as well as working really hard to get forward to support Hawks' when attacking. Brighton scored a further 3 goals however Hawks did not stop working and Lucy picked up the ball on the right hand side and drove past a couple of Brighton defenders and along the baseline, before hitting the ball across the goal face where tiny Claire was waiting to score her 2nd goal and Hawks' 3rd.
The game finished 6-3 but the Ladies 2s can be really proud of their performance as they played some great hockey and were unlucky not to score more goals. The Ladies 2s now look forward to their final game against Spencer on the 19th March.
