Promotion Quest continues for L5s

05 March 2016, 11:30, Banbury Road North (Top)

Ladies' 5s 2 - 0 Wokingham Ladies 2s

The ladies 5s took on Wokingham on Saturday. After a frustrating goalless draw in our last encounter in December, the team were determined to come out on top. This, coupled with the push for a 2nd place promotion spot, meant there was a lot to play for.

Hawks were slow off the start and the game was concentrated in our 25 for a good bit of time. However the team soon warmed up and some great balls were played through to super-speedy attackers Shereen, Maddie, Chloe and Izzie. Hawks came close a number of times to the goal but couldn’t strike lucky.

A big focus in training on transitions and switching the ball paid off as Hawks started playing some beautiful hockey. The defence distributed the ball around the back with pace and accuracy, whilst the rest of the team made some promising leads and began changing channels with their passing. Wokingham looked on the backfoot.

The breakthrough came just before half-time after a great team effort pushed the ball up into Wokingham’s D. Kirsty dribbled into the D and passed off to Maddie at back post…who graciously left the ball untouched as it slid into the back corner! Hawks went into half-time feeling positive and ready to score more.

Wokingham proved a physical side and were strong in defence. However, after a number of near-concerted short corners, Lottie scored an absolute cracker from a far wide position in the D to make it 2-0. Hawks held out til half time, securing another all-important win and having played some exciting and clever hockey. The promotion battle continues!
