L5s work hard to secure another win against Wychwood!

20 February 2016, 10:00, Banbury Road North (Near)

Ladies' 5s 4 - 1 Wychwood Ladies 1s

Hawks met early at 9 am on a chilly morning ready to play a good game of hockey on the home turf with push back at 10 am. Hawks came out strong in the first half by playing forward down the wings and some lovely crosses into our attacking circle. In the 3rd minute Sandra scored an early goal. The team made sure to keep their heads in the game even with the excitement of this early goal.

Wychwood had some solid defenders and we spotted early on in the game that the ball had to be passed around them rather than through them. So some brilliant play from Kirsty in midfield who beat many of their defence down the middle by going around them and scored a goal in the 14th minute – fabulous scrappy play!

We then seemed to lose our structure a bit as we were winning and in the 17th minute Wychwood made a break with some speedy play and scored, despite our strong defence consisting of Susan and Becky. Unfortunately there were too many of them and too little of us at that point in our defending circle.

Half time we discussed how we needed to make more decisive leads and more transfers to change channels and get the ball up, over the usual packets of jelly babies. Hawks went back on for the second half determined and ready to compete. In the 16th minute we managed to score a goal from a clean cross from the right into Sandra who was fabulously positioned at top D and smashed it in.

Spirits were high, despite the cold and Hawks carried on battling. Structure was definitely better in the second half and Sandra managed get us a decisive win in the 30th minute. Everyone played to the best of their ability against a team that put a lot of pressure on us in their D, yet we came out the stronger side with brilliant team work. Connections between the back four were great and we had some lovely runs from midfielder Maddie and forward Lottie, again doing her strong roll outs which time and time again beat the defender. It was a tough game, but we generally had the most possession getting some short corners which we kept simple with the straight strike. Well done girls for the well deserved win against a strong opposition!
