Eagles find winning ways. With the journey to Woking taking longer than anticipated the warm up was a little curtailed and the 12 intrepid Eagles were unsure of what to expect from their opponents.
What resulted was a hard fought friendly game with no quarter given on either side but played and umpired in good spirit. After the opening forays at both ends it was the Eagles who opened the scoring after a clearance from the defence found Kelly Scott in midfield. She combined well with the forwards and just as it looked as though the ball might escape Linda Phillips appeared to touch it in at the far post.
Woking responded strongly and the Eagles defence had to work hard to cover their attacks, Linda Billington in goal made crucial stops and the defensive short corner team were impressive in holding firm. The midfield worked tirelessly too with Jane and Emma offering options down the wings. After one foray a short corner was won and Sherene stepped up to stop and slap the ball low and hard into the goal.
It was 2-0 at half time and Woking were not happy with the way things were and attacked vigorously in the second half. The Eagles were on the back foot and put under considerable and consistent pressure from their forwards. Excellent marking and flat stick tackling from Susan, Bernie and Becky frustrated their forwards and there were only rare occasions when the ball was released from defence sufficiently for an attack to be built.
It was however on one occasion when a quick release found Vicky running strongly in midfield and combining with Kelly overloading Woking who had over committed in attack. A well timed run saw Kelly draw the keeper enough for a slip to Sherene who slotted the ball into an open goal.
Woking 'were better then this' and continued to apply pressure, only for another goal, this time from Linda Phillips to be scored on the counter. 4-0 . Woking would still not give up however and the Eagles defence had to absorb more pressure which eventually led to a goal being concede. 4-1 with 15 minutes to play.
By this time however legs were tiring and the balance of play evened out over the pitch. The final quarter passed without significant incident and the final whistle came with no further score.
Thanks to Woking for an enjoyable and tough game and for providing two umpires. With one match in the league left to play the Eagles maintain their position second in the league one point behind the leaders and one match to go!
