On a miserable Saturday afternoon, Hawks Men’s 1st XI took to the pitch to take on Old Cranleighans who sat just one place above them in the league. After a few poor results, Hawks were keen to get back in their pre-Christmas run of form and challenge for a top 4 finish in the league.
Hawks started the more dominant team dealing with any initial attacks and looking threatening themselves. Early chances went missing along with a few excellent saves from OC’s keeper who had an outstanding game! The deadlock was finally broken when Matt Wood rifled home a backhand shot into the top right corner. Hawks 1, OC’s 0. Hawks continued to put pressure on but couldn’t seem to trap the ball going forward and seemingly fell asleep... Hawks decided to let an OC midfielder run with the ball from the half way line into their D and push the ball into the corner to make it 1-1.
With the score tied at 1-1, Hawks knew they needed to up their game for the second half and couldn’t face another draw or loss! OC’s put some early pressure on hawks in the second half, but only having 11 took its toll on the opposition. A long range pass from Will Phillips found Kit Cutter at the top of the D, who deflected the ball past the keeper into the top left corner. Some sloppy defending from Hawks lead to a Short Corner being awarded to OC’s who converted only for them to then concede a Penalty stroke at the other end which Hawks Converted. With 15 Minutes to go, OC’s started to lose their tempers with Hawks and the umpires but continued to put pressure on. Hawks just about managed to keep their cool and hold on for the 3-2 win. This win bumped Hawks into 4th place, just one point above OC’s with 6 games left to play.
