Hawks and Oxford faced off again, this time at BRN, on a cold, blustery day with Oxford starting by far the stronger. With the Hawks team taking time to settle, the first 10 minutes saw Oxford camped in the Hawks half, and Hawks often panicking when they did gain possession and turning the ball over through poor passing choices. Luckily for Hawks Annie and Maya were marshalling the defence and Cora was her usual excellent self in goal. Gradually Grace started to assert herself in the centre half role, and with support of Tilde and Kate, in the half positions, our forwards started to see glimpses of the ball.
At this stage, and against the run of play, Hawks broke quickly, working the ball forward at pace, over distance, and passing through multiple layers of defensive. Lara, Scarlett, and Alessia provided excellent support to Rosie who broke the circle and scored with a fine shot to the far post where Alice was waiting....just in case.
Oxford continued to press, whilst Hawks grew into the game. Tiggy had the ball in the net, but the whistle had gone for a short corner. 1-0 at half time.
The second half was a much more even affair with both sides playing good hockey but, in all honesty, little by way of clear scoring opportunities in the D. Circle penetration by both sides was a little messy with both Keepers stopping well what shots there were. As the second half progressed Rachel really grew into the match making some excellent ball carries into space from right half. When space was tight her passing to the right wing was good too.
So, a fine game where Oxford probably deserved at least a draw, and there were no surprises when Cora was voted MOM by the Oxford Girls. Hawks vote went to Ottilie who had a sterling game for our worthy opponents.
Lastly, thank you to the two Umpires, Kirsty McCulloch and Lisa Scragg.
Goal scorer - Rosie Olver
