Oxford Hawks Mens 1's. v London Wayfarers.

13 February 2016

Men's 1s 4 - 4 London Wayfarers Men's 1s

After a disappointing result last week, conceding in the dying minutes of the game, against Henley; Hawks were motivated to get their second half of the season back on track. With an early meet time and a trip around the M25 to Raynes Park, resulted in one car getting lost due to co-pilot/DOD Cutter.

After a good warm up Hawks started the brighter side with early pressure applied to Wayfares. Despite this Hawks went 1 nill down against the run of play due to a deflected short corner.

Hawks continued to apply pressure on Wayfares back 4. As a result Sam Chilvers was fauled in the circle. The penalty stroke converted by Biggs. Hawks continued this pressure. A free hit just on the edge of the circle was quickly taken by Williams played first time by Rhodes to Cutter to an unmarked Dunhill at the top of the D resulted in Hawks taking the lead. Shortly followed with Hawks finding the goal again through Wood.

The rest of the 1st half was similar fashion; Hawks with the possession. However Wayfares scored on the break. Half time Wayfares 2. Hawks 3.

The second half started with a high tempo with Hawks finding success down the left with Biggs and Cutter, who played an early ball into the circle to find Chilvers who calmly passed the ball to Wood to beat the keeper. Hawks 4. Wayfarers 2. Hawks were unlucky not to seal a 5th when Rhodes took a free hit quickly, carried the ball to find Cutter who again played an early ball into the circle to find an unmarked Chilvers who put the ball into the net. However after a consultation by the umpires, who had an excellent game, disallowed the goal due the ball coming off a Hawks foot.

For a period of the second half, Hawks lost shape due to Wayfares pushing to get back into the game. Williams broke down play in the same way as he did in the first half which resulted in a green card being upgraded to a yellow. Dunhill decided to join him which resulted in Hawks playing with 9 men. Hawks saw this period of play through however when they went back up to 11 Wayfares scored again.

Hawks needed to see through the dying minutes of the game, in similar fashion as last week. Hawks cleared through MOM Murch however a turnover on the half way line allowed Wayfares, now playing with a kicking back. Wayfares played the ball to the free player who drilled the ball into the top right netting with a backhand shot. The game was an identical story as last week; 4-4 with Hawks dominating the possession however failing to see out the final minutes of the game as a result dream of a top 3 finish have been shattered.
