Ladies O35s lose in cruelest of fashions!

07 February 2016, 13:45, Banbury Road North (Near)

Ladies O35s 1 - 1 Whitley Bay and Tynemouth O35s ladies

The Ladies Over 35s welcomed Whitley Bay to BRN for their national cup quarter final, very grateful for the home draw (Whitley Bay something like 6 hours away). Not put off by the waves of Adidas from the oppo, Hawks started well and settled into the game. It was played at a furious tempo throughout, but Hawks made great use of their subs under the watchful eye of manager Bex Fatoaks. The home side came close to scoring when Sherene Butler showed great skills on the left and played the perfect cross into the D, but the defence cleared their lines well. Outstanding performances all over the park, in particular from MOM Kathryn Poulter and seasoned veteran Phil Williams caused headaches for the away side but it remained goalless until the break.

Whitley Bay put Hawks under huge pressure in the opening ten minutes but outstanding defending from Caro Harris and Clare Apples-King at the heart of defence stopped them taking the lead, and some nothing-short-of-outstanding 70 yard passes down the left flank from Catherine Taylor to Linda Phillips provided much needed relief. With the game looking destined for strokes, Kathryn Poulter decided that that wasn't a very nice way to end a game and that she would do something about it. So she duely ran half the length of the pitch, then cut inside her defender and slammed the ball past the keeper. Crowd go wild! However they didn't quite manage to park the bus and two minutes later, Whitley Bay rather annoyingly equalised. In the last two minutes the Hawks defence had to work hard to defend a couple of corners but they held strong and the final whistle blew. Flicks followed, and the lottery started. It wasn't to be Hawks' day as  the oppo won the day, but it didn't dampen the enjoyment of the game, nor of the whole campaign, brilliantly coordinated by Caroline Baggs. Same again next year please! (Minus the losing on flicks part)
