Gerrards Cross 1s swept away by Hawks Ladies 4s

06 February 2016, 11:30, Banbury Road North (Top)

Ladies' 4s 5 - 1 Gerrards Cross Ladies 1s

With space and time in the Hawks Ladies changing rooms at a premium the captain’s call for a prompt arrival was heeded such that for once Pip was not the last to arrive! A quick team talk to sort out shirts, positions and subbing routines followed. Then it was out into the blustery conditions to head past the Ladies 3s who on the near pitch were beating Bicester and onto the top pitch to face a determined looking Gerrard’s Cross side who with a game in hand were sitting just 3 points behind Hawks Ladies 4s.

With Gerrard’s Cross opting for first push back, Hawks had the wind behind them and an early attack just 2 minutes into the game saw Kim deftly dribble the ball into the D from the left to make the connection with Rebecca and Hawks were already a goal up. With such a positive start Hawks maintained their focus giving Gerrard’s Cross little opportunity to counter attack. Hawks subbing regime seemed to be working and the second goal came 20mins later when a through ball saw Emma’s strike hit the back board. Connections were being made across the pitch and passes round the back between Charlotte, Lissy, Becky, Phil and Vicky saw the ball switch from side to side. Occasionally Hawks failed to find the right team-mate to pass to giving Gerrard’s Cross the chance to drive into their attacking D only to find Megan saving every shot they made. Half-time score 2-0.

While the wind continued to blow - the rain was at least holding off - the half-time team talk reminded us all that 2-0 was not the best score-line to be holding and that the next goal, whichever side scored, could be crucial. Rebecca, Giorgia, Pip, Emily and Emma all had opportunities to claim the next goal only to be foiled at the last moment by a Gerrard’s Cross stick/keeper and it was left to Kim who, hogging the left post, saw her first shot saved on the line by a leg but then drove the re-bound into the goal and Hawks were 3-0 up. Soon after, as the crowd support swelled with Henry Dawes’ first outing, Hawks were rewarded with a short corner. The Hawks huddle decided the slip to the injector might just work and thus it was as Pip saw her injected ball come back to her for Hawks 4th goal of the game. Gerrard’s Cross, now with the wind behind them, created some good attacking opportunities but half backs Charlotte, Megan, Catherine and Vicky were keeping them at bay. However an attack down their left saw the ball hit Phil’s foot in the D and Hawks defence had a short corner to defend. Defend it they did and before Gerrard’s Cross could re-group Vicky had passed the ball out of defence to inners Jessica and Caz who drove forward at pace to find Rebecca ready to pounce and score her 2nd goal of the day. 5-0 Hawks.

With time ticking, and some slight distraction from the Ladies 1s match on the other pitch, Gerrard’s Cross made one final push forward. For once the Hawks defence failed to clear the ball and a lucky strike by the Gerrard’s Cross captain saw them get their consolation goal. Final score 5-1 to Hawks!

MOM was awarded to Charlotte.
