On a chilly morning, Hawks were ready to do battle with Abingdon Pilgrims, a team we knew little about apart from they had one 'star' striker, Laura, as the first fixture between us they were unable to field a team in October
So our team talk started included making sure someone marked Laura very closely! We also talked about keeping the width and moving the ball quicker instead of running into players.
With this in mind, we started very positively with lots of possession and this was rewarded with a early goal finished by Sherene after an unselfish pass from Emma. The first half continued this way with more goals from Blanche who followed up a shot taken from outside the D, a lovely straight strike by Buffy from a penalty corner, a high ball lifted in at a tight angle from Sandra & a pass through the goalkeepers legs from Maddie completed our goals for the first half. Pilgrims were starting to become dangerous on the break and we did allow them to score one back.
Half time score 5-1
The second half didn't start with quite as much possession from Hawks, Pilgrims obviously had a stern team talk at half time because they had fair amount of the play during this half and came out stronger. Hawks fought on and the scoring continued with Sherene getting her second by following up a shot on goal and putting it away, Blanche also scoring her second with a straight strike from the top of the D, Kirsty followed up Sandra's shot on goal putting it away and Holly scoring t with a lovely reverse stick sweep.
We did allow Pilgrims to have a couple of penalty corners and it was end to end play at one stage with Pilgrims pulling another goal back.
This win certainly helps with our goal difference as we head into next weekend with a top of the table match at Marlow with the winners ending the week top of the table.
