2nd Win of the Weekend for the Ladies 2s

10 January 2016, 13:00, Oxford Brookes

Ladies' 2s 4 - 1 Oxford Ladies 1s

Oxford Hawks Ladies 2s arrived for their local derby against Oxford fresh off the back of a dominant display against league rivals Epsom. There were no signs of tired legs as the team started on the front foot and applied lots of pressure on the Oxford defence. After a few probing runs forward in particular from defender Laura Scragg, Hawks won a Penalty Corner which was promptly scored by tiny wee Claire Werlinger in her trademark way. Captain Kara Kerr also netted from a lovely straight strike but sadly her spatial awareness betrayed her and it was struck from outside the D. Going in at quarter time Hawks ladies were buoyed by their performance so far and determined to push on and further assert their authority.

The move into a more advanced role for Lucy Aldred paid dividends when she delivered a cracking ball into the D for Emily Wilkins to tip in with eyes closed on the near post for a 2-0 lead. Hawks continued to assert their authority on the game going in to half time. The 3rd quarter saw Oxford come back with a vengeance. Led by Man of the Match Apples, Hawks defence stood strong and soaked up lots of pressure. Despite some good defensive work Hawks struggled to get the ball forward and Oxford were rewarded for their pressure with a goal.

Not to be deterred, Hawks pulled themselves together with some good direction from the sideline and began to move the ball about beautifully again. Emily Taylor and Gabs McErlain worked hard to create space and the latter delivered a sublime ball to the top of the D for Emily Wilkins to turn and bury into the bottom corner for her second of the day and Hawks 3rd.

Rather than resting on their laurels, the Hawks ladies remained goal hungry. None more so than Jane Lewis who was rewarded for beautifully crashing the ball into the bottom corner after the whistle had gone with a green card. Wrapping up the scoring and a wonderful day’s work for the team was Claire Werlinger who bravely completed her brace, diving low to poke the ball past the keeper and showing no fear following the previous days facial injury!

Another win over another league rival sees a reinvigorated Hawks 2s head into the league next weekend!!!
