With two great results over the last two weeks Hawks were keen to keep the momentum going against local rivals Oxford University. Before the game there was a minutes silence for Tom Wilson a 22 year old player from Old Loughts who sadly died after a training accident this week.
The games against Oxford Uni are always frenetic affairs. The game started brightly, Hawks set their shape and Uni enjoyed moving the ball around the back. Within the first five minutes Sam Chilvers picked the ball and made a mazey run through the Uni defence. The ball finished at the far post for Dan Rhodes to expertly back hand a shot high into the net to go one nil up. The rest of the half was played between the 25’s, Ox Uni at every opportunity crashed the ball into the D with only one foot found Uni were limited to a short corner. Both teams had trouble keeping the ball, resulting in lots of double turnovers.
The half time chat was for Hawks to play slower. The second half was still played at a quick often uncontrolled pace. Ox Uni. had the main share of possession but failed to make any inroads to the Hawks well organised defence. As Uni. pushed up the pitch there was lots of room behind the Uni defence. MOM Kit Cutter made use of the space carrying the ball from just passed the half way line to win a short corner. Jack Biggs buried the ball in the corner. A very satisfying finish to 2015 with all to play for next year.
