On yet another wet and windy Saturday we turned out to play "top of the league" Maidenhead. With 4 of our strongest players unavailable we had a slightly weaker team. Two new players were invited to the L6s, who although unfamiliar with the team blended in well on their debut. Maidenhead, as expected, came out strongly .The Maidenhead press gave our defence few options on the hit out, making it difficult to connect with the midfield, however with the skill and tenacity of Issy Watt and Gail we were able to penetrate the wall of white and our forwards formed an attack resulting in a goal. The last touch ,by Holly Senior.
The rest of the match was fairly evenly matched. Maidenhead consistently appeared to have one player unmarked to the extent that we almost felt they could have sneaked on an extra player. A series of short corners awarded to Maidenhead in the second half threatened to equal our lead but luckily we had found their Achilles heel. Every short corner failed to result in a goal.2 minutes to go ....the longest 2 minutes of the game ,which felt like 5.It was in this never ending last 2 ,that Maidenhead made a break and that one unmarked player was neatly positioned on the post waiting to slot in the deflection. The whistle blew. A 1-1 draw! Just a few seconds from a win, but probably a fair result.
MOM was Issy Watt who worked tirelessly with skill and tenacity throughout the match.
