Hawks L 6's travelled to Headington School on a very wet and windy morning. Very pleased to have Sarah Mann back in the team; her first game for us since last season. Hawks started strongly and put early pressure on the Oxford defence. The first 10 minutes was spent with Hawks attacking the opposition D, but Oxford defended well and had a very strong keeper and so no goals came from it. Oxford responded and did get a few chances to take a shot on our goal, all of which were calmly cleared by the unflappable and reliable Purdy. When defending a short corner Becky was a bit too keen to shout us out ,resulting in a premature run by Ali who was subsequently sent to the half way line and so we were one down ,but still managed to prevent a goal against us. We started to gel as a team and our midfield worked well together, connecting passes. In particular, Bella worked tirelessly and made countless tackles and interceptions, earning the praise of our opposition players. Our forwards worked well together in attack and soon there came the first goal of the match from Dette. 1-0 up and just before half time a series of short corners for Hawks but unfortunately no goal came from it.
Becky's team talk at half time obviously inspired the team to up their game, and within minutes of the restart Dette put their keeper under pressure who made a brave attempt to prevent another score against them, but Dette remained calm and managed to put the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. Hawks fought on with great performances by Kate, Ali, Amelia, Issy and Zoe, to mention a few. Oxford focused on a defensive game which meant that the match finished 2-0 to Hawks, unable to convert the countless attempts at goal. Many thanks to Deborah who was too unwell to play but who still turned up on a very wet day to organise us, take photos, take match fees, provide match shirts, control subbing and sort out the paperwork! What would we do without her?!
MOM was Bella for her tireless efforts and skill in intercepting and tackling countless times, and for giving 100% effort!
