Despite the scoreline, this was an oddly disappointing performance by the Mens 4s and there is a lot of room for improvement. Maidenhead 2s were relegated from the league above last year and were expecting an easier ride this season, but they admitted this has not so far been the case. Hawks had a heady blend of youth (Flory, Webster and Scragg) and experience (Martin, Crowley and Poulter) and with the Autumnal sun of their backs, the 4s were out of the blocks quickly and started moving the ball around confidently and with purpose. After 15 minutes we were three nil up, all courtesy of Marky Mark and his impressive pace and sublime finishing, supplied in the main by Tim Martin from the back and his bullet-like slap-pass, whereupon we took our collective foot off the throttle and let our visitors back in the game. Firstly, we conceded a brace of short corners, the second being followed up off the second shot and deflected past the stranded keeper off Tim M’s stick. Another sticky moment occurred when a cross from well outside the D inexplicably crept under Atkins’ kicker, but was claimed by their boorish right winger. Chaos reigned for 30 seconds until the miked up umpires conferred and rightly disallowed it. 3-1 at half time and right royal b*ll*cking followed from Tim and rightly so, as we were all guilty of coasting. We played better in the second half, Tim Webster finishing off a couple of great moves and Crowley increasing his tally to five, but towards the end of the game, we again allowed Maidenhead possession and were caught asleep at the back to give them a further consolation. So, Half Term Report: could do better and a few of us need to pull our socks up. We however remain second in the league.
Commiserations to our two Wallabies for the result on Saturday, but a great performance against the ABs.
