Ladies' 3s 1 - 0 Sonning Ladies 2s
After a tough few weekends of matches, where the 3’s were unable to convert their strong performance on pitch into 3 points, the girls were raring to go against local rivals, Sonning. From the off, Hawks demonstrated great passing hockey, with Nicky, Claire and Emily T patiently working the ball up the pitch against Sonning’s half-court press. Quick distribution of the ball to the half- backs Rosie, Lucy, Mel and Katie allowed Hawks to efficiently bypass the Sonning mid-field to find Hawks players leading up front. Sonning quickly responded however by crowding the defense, preventing Hawks from getting any clear shots in front of goal. Skilled play from Hawks forwards Beth, Olivia, Row and Lizzie saw Hawks awarded a number of short corners, however a strong Sonning keeper prevented the ball reaching the backboard, leaving the score 0-0 at half-time.
Stern words from Captain Lizzie at half-time saw Hawks increase the pressure on Sonning; great complimentary leading from Saskia, Gabs and Laura created the much needed space up front, and saw Hawks repeatedly challenging the Sonning defense. Following another string of short corners, a strike from Lizzie was deflected by the keeper back to Mel, who accurately passed the ball to Saskia who tapped the ball in on the left post. 1-0 to Hawks. Hawks followed up with numerous attacks on the D, but unfortunately were unable to hit the target. Despite a few unnerving breaks from Sonning, cleared expertly by Linda B, the 3’s came away with a 1-0 win, and a well deserved 3 points!
