The fours journeyed for the second time in as many weeks to Reading aiming to return to winning ways. Hawks started strongly and immediately put the Reading defence under pressure, keen to show that we could play first half hockey. After some ping-pong passing with both teams keen to get an early goal, Reading managed to break and win a penalty corner. A questionable decision gave Reading a penalty stroke and the lead.
The ten-minute period of Hawks domination that followed left Reading wondering what had gone wrong. With great linking in midfield between Lissy, Megan and Helen, Hawks pushed up the pitch and with Tuesday night ‘s corner training fresh in our minds, Sandra smashed the ball into the goal. Within seconds of the restart, Olivia made an interception and with a terrific solo effort dribbled the ball into the d and calmly slotted it past the keeper. The midfield again through Sophie T, Catherine and Emily Dawes kept the ball in Reading’s 25 and allowed the twirling Sherene to add her name to the score sheet. Minutes before half time Caz also joined the goal scorers after some textbook transfers by Becky, Phil and Emily.
We began the second half feeling confident that we could extend our lead but were immediately put under pressure from a fired-up Reading. With some strong tackles from the defence and saves from Deborah, Hawks survived and cleared it back to the forwards. Another well-rehearsed corner routine saw Sandra tap the ball in on the post.
With our continuous attack the forwards kept the Reading defence on their toes but eventually Rebecca looped the ball into the goal. In the dying minutes of the game Reading gave away another corner, which was struck, into the goal by Rebecca. A fantastic result after coming back from last week!
A special thanks to our goalkeepers. Evelyn persuaded the powers to be to move her tennis match allowing her to play the 1st half. Deborah padded up for the second half and did a sterling job! Thanks so much ladies; so much appreciated!
