After the disappointment of last week the 2s travelled to the south coast to play Eastbourne determined to get their first points on the board.
And they got the perfect start as within 3 minutes they were ahead. Bas Marshall picked the ball up in the inside right channel, ghosted past 3 defenders and unleashed a backhand into the roof of the net. Hawks continued to press effectively and looked dangerous when in possession. They should have been much further ahead by the break but lacked the cutting edge required in the final 3rd. Eastbourne had a couple of chances, the key one being the miss of the empty net which came as the result of ed Ellis being bowled in the middle of the pitch.
half time, 1-0 up but the key message being the required improvement in the final 3rd.
As expected, Eastbourne came out fighting and had their fair share of chances but found Hargreaves in superb form. And it was Hawks who scored next from a penalty corner with Andrews flicking hard and low after some good work from Ellis on the right hand side. 2-0 but the game was not over. Eastbourne kept coming and eventually got their reward with a stroke after the ball was blocked illegally on the line. However, once again Hargreaves stepped up and saved low to his right. Hawks spent the final 10 minutes absorbing the sustained Eastbourne pressure and then finally made an overload count with a great ball from sobes finding Janes in the circle who found Bennett to finish the move off.
3-0 and the 2s are up and running. Next week they entertain Holcombe back at BRN looking for another 3 points.
