It was always going to be tough opening fixture for Oxford Hawks Mens 1`'s, away at Milton Keynes, however fuelled by their pre match Venga they were able to scrap through as 4-3 winners.
With their preparation before the game disrupted hawks got off to a bad start and on a slow, sticky and bobbly pitch, soon found themselves 1-0 down. However they responded well and Simon Robinson scored a rare goal to equalise as he slotted in a rebound from a short corner.
However Hawks were soon behind once again, but once again rebounded strongly as Sam Chilvers beat several defenders before topping his shot over the keepers foot into the bottom corner to level the score going into half time.
Hawks came out strongly in the second half and deserved to go 3-2 up when Dom Roche scored a well placed flick from a short corner. It looked like that might be enough to win the game, as Hawks continues to push for another goal. However Milton Keynes fought hard to get back into the game and on a quick break away worked it down the right hand side and pulled it across to score from close range.
It was a tense finish to the game as Hawks pushed for a goal and Milton Keynes defended resolutely. However with three minutes to play Hawks won a short corner. It broke down at the top of the D, but eventually fell to Sam Chilvers whose shot was deflected over the keeper and slowly looped into the net. On balance it was a fair reflection how the game had played out, especially on the second half.
After the game all enjoyed a nice match tea, although some ‘Old Etonians’ had hoped for lobster and caviar, we look forward to Lewes at home next week.
