The Mens 4s first league match of the season pitted them against Sonning 3s and it couldn’t have started better as a slick move started by Ray Prince down the right wing ended in a tap in from Mark Crowley (turning up on time this week!), without the opposition even touching the ball. Straight after that, we scored an immediate second from our first short corner as Ed tapped in from close range after a neat one-two. Then came a less savoury aspect in the proceedings as two hooked sticks resulted in the Sonning player yanking Ed’s stick out of his hands and his favoured Kookaburra flew directly into Pablo’s forehead, standing nearby – resulting in a gushing geyser of blood and a visit to the JR. Regrouping, Hawks didn’t allow themselves to be put off by this loss and carried on dominating the first half with some wonderful passing play. The team was a classic blend of gnarled experience and energetic youth and the trio of Harry Venables, Nick Mahon (their proud player-dads looking on from the sidelines) and Ray Prince performed brilliantly; the former scoring a brace, the middle causing chaos down the left and the latter having a calm, assured presence about him, quite Jonny Potter-esque in demeanour. In contrast, we had Tim Martin up front. Never one to let the opposition get the upper hand, Tim, although playing out of position, dominated his markers and scored a brilliant hattrick, mostly on the reverse stick, whilst allowing the 'youthful' Crowley to do his running for him. The second half continued as the first, a couple of neat finishes from Harry and Marky Mark tormenting their defence with his speed; the defence coped admirably with nearly all of the forays Sonning made, barring their only short corner from which they scored an annoying consolation goal. The final score was 9-1 was an excellent result, our joy only slightly dampened by Pablo’s injury. Many thanks to Chair and Dave D for their top notch officiating.
