The first match of the season on the first weekend of the season. As the team met in the car park talk of the previous days matches dominated as players had played against each other the day before. Now we were to play together as a team and rivalries put to one side. Hsu Min Chung was welcomed as another new Eagle. Thanks also to Marianne for umpiring.
First tactical move was from Karen taking us into the home changing room. Second was to do a bit of a warm up so we were ready from the start. A good attacking move led to Eagles scoring first. Debates after the game about whether or not the ball was on its route to goal from Sherene's strike to the far post, but a deft touch from Karen in response to Vicky's shout to her to 'get a stick on it' put the ball into the net. It wasn't long however before Basingstoke counter attacked and a short corner was conceded. A strong straight strike and it was 1-1. Not deflated Eagles regrouped and Sherene impressed again with a lovely lifted slap shot which proved to be by far the best goal of the game.
Basingstoke's experience started to pay dividends and they began to work through the midfield and were cynical in the circle. By half time they were 4-2 ahead after some impressive short corner work that was hard to defend despite the valiant efforts of the defence and Deborah in goal.
The prospect of running in the spider man race on the athletics meet next door had appeal as tired legs were forced to keep moving on a lovely hot day. No lack of effort from the whole team, and some lovely passing moves but unfortunately no further goals at our end. Only two conceded in the second half however thanks to the post and some great saves from Deborah.
An after match photo meant we lost the last tactical move and were relegated to the away changing rooms, a blocked drain and flooded floors! Tea, sausages and chips were most welcome.
Congratulations to Emma Forrester for her player of the match.

Let's hope Kelly recovers soon and is back playing in October.
