The Hawks development team under the guise of the 7th selected team stepped on to pitch and in the late summer sun shine looked at the adult team facing them. With a starting X1 containing 6/7 U16/U14 , they were looking forward to the contest.
The solid presence of Jack Sobey between the sticks and the assured Mike Henman in the middle of defence allowed the youngsters to play with confidence.
In a 20 minute spell the teams were well matched , and strong performances from John Black Jnr, Laurie Cooke and George Chambers controlled the right channel and Bradley Fogden kept a cool head against constant pressure.
The deadlock was finally broken when the ball broke kindly to Oxford in the 25 and despite a good initial save by Sobey Oxford went 1-0 ahead.
Hawks then pressed and a good move involving John Black Snr, forced a save and Whitey (Simon White) snatched the chance with aplomb to make it 1-1.
As is often the case a lack of concentration after scoring a goal caught the defence on the back foot and Sobey was unable to keep out a well stuck effort.
The game remained a good contest. The fitness began to tell in the warm sunshine and Oxford finished the stronger of the 2 and managed to secure 3 more goals to make the final score 5-1.
There are areas to work on as the season continues into league fixtures but the performance showed significant promise and the platform is there to be built on.
Finally the game was played in great sprit by both teams and the Umpires managed the game extremely well. They received full support and respect from the Players.
It will be a fun season.
