A sunny Saturday lunchtime saw Hawks Ladies’ 4s up against a Witney side who had pipped them to promotion last season. The opening minutes saw Hawks camped in their own half, following the opposition to crowd around the ball. Slowly, however, self-belief kicked in and towards the end of the half, Hawks slowly gained the upper hand by passing out and round, and were unlucky not to score with a string of short corners. Witney sneaked in one goal despite the valiant efforts of stand-in goalie Jacqui (how can you be that good on one game per year in goal?).
The second half started brightly and produced an excellent goal from Pip after a sustained spell of pressure and some excellent attacking moves. Superb commitment came from Sophie Bennett as always, injuring herself in the process (no doubt the hair cushioned the impact….). Caroline Baggs continued her strong start to the season, helping Lissie at the back to her joint player of the match award. (Paola was the other – some wonderful interceptions and attacking moves from the back). Unfortunately, Hawks tired towards the end due to lack of substitutes (despite Kasey’s valiant efforts to help – much appreciated).
Man of the match, however, was undoubtedly awarded to Theodore Williams – attending his first Hawks game at the ripe old age of ten days – awesome performance.
The whole day bodes well for the remainder of the season – promotion from this division is the aim and this performance shows that this is a realistic aim and a distinct possibility – roll on next Saturday!!!
