HAwks Mens 6's in valiant defeat to Newbury.

14 March 2015, 10:30, St. Edward's School

Men's 6s 1 - 2 Newbury & Thatcham Men's 3s

This was a massively gutsy performance by the 6s against Newbury, still pushing for promotion and. 1-2 defeat seemed particularly harsh. Fielding a more senior team that beat Ashford the previous week, we were under the cosh from the start from a very quick Thatcham side, who created several early chances but came up against an obdurate defence of a belligerent Jonesy, bullish Mike Image, calm chair and the promising Jamie. However, it wasn't all one way traffic as both Affie with his unorthodox skills and Monkey, being a class above, managed to embarrass the promotion-pushers.

However the game turned on two instances. First, on the stroke of half time, Nathan was tracking back but in the act of fouling their centre half, crumpled and looked like he fractured an ankle. In a world of pain, he was carted off to A&E. Nil all at half time, and Chris Orme filling the centre half berth with aplomb, we continued to frustrate the opposition before the unthinkable happened with ten minutes to go: we scored. Some quick thinking from Archie meant he swept the ball to Steve who first-timed it past their stranded keeper. Then, disaster struck. An innocuous ball was struck from outside the D into the area and Atkins calmly watched the ball into the goal; unfortunately, they claimed a touch which the near side umpire was unclear about, however the other umpire a full 60 yards away concurred with Newbury and a goal given after much deliberation. Being the keeper, I have to be careful what I say here; no one was near touching this ball and claiming it was undoubtedly cheating, but if that's how they want to win games, it's up to them. We are not playing professional sport. Newbury smelt blood and we, distraught, crumpled. With a few minutes to go their slightly 'unhinged' forward was denied (again) by the keeper, but their veteran winger followed up and smashed the ball into the roof to take the three points.

No doubt, Newbury & Thatcham were the better team, but we can hold our heads high and take the moral high ground. We send our best wishes to Nathan and the 6s move towards low-table obscurity, with Ashford technically still in touch if they win their last 3.....its a mite closer than we would like.....
