Hawks set off early for 12:00 noon push back. With the M25 clear, coffee and croissant was enjoyed in Tescos before the game. After looking at the pitch which was mainly sand with a few green bits, the quality of the game was never going to be a classic. Hawks started well penetrating the D four times in the first ten minutes. The Wayfarers keeper was a magnet, several shots being hit straight at him. Wayfarers had few attacks of their own, with a bit of slip sliding going on Wayfarers picked up a loose ball in the D and opened their account. Hawks really should have scored, persisting in hitting the ball at the player wearing the big pads. At one stage the game had to be stopped as he ‘wore’ one on the knee. A loose pass back saw Si Robinson lay in the sand, the resultant one on one with Hargraves in goal was a win for Hargraves.
Half time Hawks 0 Wayfarers 1
Half time chat, ‘we are in this boys’ was rewarded with a second from a Wayfarers short corner. Hawks kept plugging away, Ethan Chapman was asked to leave the pitch to clean the blood from his dripping knee graze. Goal for Hawks, Ben Wilson flicked in from close range. A second shortly after for Wells, scoring from an acute angle. Wayfarers were on the rack, after specialist training from National league flicker Tim Davenport, Jack Biggs fired one down the middle parting the legs of the Wayfarers keeper. Hawks were deservedly in the lead. With five minutes to go Wayfarers drew level from worked short corner. In the final seconds Hawks were awarded a corner of their own, the whistle blew, the non engaged umpire appeared to overturn the decision. Final result Hawks 3 Wayfarers 3. Frankly Div 1 Prem Regional hockey should not be played on this pitch. Next week Town V Gown at home at our fantastic facility.
