With spring having retreated into the distant memory it was a somewhat chilly afternoon at BRN. We welcomed Gerrards Cross who had a lot of young players which bodes well for their club.
We went one nil down to a breakaway goal following a short corner at the other end. Maybe having a centre back stopping wasn't such a good idea, or perhaps he could run back a bit faster. Anyway a 3 on1 with Big Dog was probably only going to go one way, however good he is. So we bucked up our ideas and scored a couple before half time, to lead 2-1. I wasn't paying too much attention to who scored but I think it was Neil (you should have hit it harder Boots) Gallagher and Boots himself. So 2-1 at halftime and we tried to work out how to give Poults some help in the middle of the park as he was doing a lot of running without much support. Another neat finish on the backhand by Brett (has he scored any on the forehand?) emphasised that lefties can play hockey and another goal from a short corner from Boots followed. Finally the coup de grace from Tom as he dragged one into the top corner, only to refuse the next opportunity as it wasn't going to happen again. That's what I like - a bit of English confidence. Our resident Aussie showed no mercy smashing a ball into the opponent on the backhand and only complained that a short wasn't given, although if it had hit him on the noggin he would have showed some sympathy. That's why the Aussies are World Champs.
So a fairly comfortable 5-1 win, and I only had 2 roastings from Big Dog, but at least Ben is back next week. Thanks to Tom Gilman for turning out and giving an accomplished performance at right half. Poults shaded the MOM and got a lot fitter.
As an aside, technically thats sees us promoted which is a fantastic achievement although the way the league has panned out this year another win might be prudent.
Thanks to Dave and Hugh for umpiring and Big Dog for putting on his kit.
