This week we welcomed Oxford 2s to BRN, after a tough game against them before Christmas and with clear blue skies, Hawks were hoping for a more positive encounter this time. Welcoming Pickup back into the side, Duncan polishing off his battle-axe for another cameo and Danny actually turning up this week, minus his new girlfriend… things were looking promising.

Although my memory may be a little hazy, after the pint of Guinness and Baileys shot due to another poor display, the game certainly didn’t pan out as hoped. Hawks were met with a tough and feisty Oxford side, and the game descended into a very scrappy affair. Hawks’ ball handling around the back was poor, and turn over allowed Oxford numerous chances, which they duly failed to convert. In patches Hawks were able to play some good attacking hockey, and began to make in-roads. Hawks were able to go into have time with a slender 1-0 lead, Ben Roe followed up a rebound from the ensuing short corner, to increase his goal tally to 9 for the season.

The second half continued in the same vein, yellow cards were dished out to both sides. Hawks played some flowing hockey, and were able to convert another short corner thanks to Ben Roe, who is now on double figures for the season. However Oxford were able to pull one back, with a neat deflection, this meant a nail biting finish but thankfully Hawks held on to remain clear by 5 points at the top.

On reflection in the showers it was agreed by both sides that the game had been fairly poor. Next week we welcome Sonning, and hopefully it will be a better spectacle for all those watching.
