Despite it being an early morning with miserable weather, we started well against mid table Abingdon. We attacked from the start and had some strong shots on goal within the first 5 minutes. However, Abingdon proved to be a very physical team which meant we struggled to get settled into the game and our usual style of short passing and beating players failed to materialise. After a rush of play, Abingdon won a short corner and executed the straight strike, putting them 1-0 up.
Unfortunately our heads went down and it became even more difficult for us to work as a team and join up our passes. We still attacked strongly, had lots of possession and were constantly attacking their D, but they often had 10 of their players defending which made it difficult for us to find the back of the net.
Abingdon took their chances where they could and broke quickly. With an unmarked player on the back post, an Abingdon deflection made it 2-0. We had pushed high, determined to get on the score sheet but unfortunately it left us exposed at the back, and another quick break gave Abingdon their 3rd goal. Credit to the whole team for not giving up and for continuing to attack. MOM went to Sophie Dawes for her speed and resilience which helped us all to keep going.
We’ve realised we need to work on executing our short corners and channelling attackers out wide, and we’re determined to do so to gain promotion. A frustrating game for us but we remain 2nd in our league and stronger than ever.
