End to end thriller as Men's 4s come out on top 7-4 vs Marlow

21 February 2015, 12:30, Banbury Road North (Top)

Men's 4s 7 - 4 Marlow Men's 3s

Well Saturday had everything, a goals fest at BRN to keep us top of the league; Robbie Scragg popping up to steal the winner and the MOM, although he really earned it by sitting next to Lawrence at the team curry; Tom turned up already dressed up for the night out; and Ed's miss which will be reminisced over for a few years, at least by him. More on that later...

Another year and another important game against Marlow 3s with them lying 3rd in the league and only 6 points between the two teams. Marlow were clinical in their finishing and went 1-0 up within the first few minutes and Hawks responded well and were awarded a stroke even though Robbie had put the ball over the line seconds later. Up steps Ben and well the rest is history - he missed and the skipper was left aggrieved that Gary "never missed a flick" Mahon had succumbed to the flu bug. So still 1-0 down and we showed a lot of character to get back in the game with Boots from a penalty corner and Ed Baldock finishing a well worked move from right to left. Nick was beginning to control the game in the middle and Dom showed lots of class and provided the engine for getting up and down. However every time we scored we were pegged back by Marlow and at halftime the score was 3 apiece, with Robbie slotting in a neat finish at the far post for the third.

Again we started strongly at the beginning of the second half scoring early through Boots, however again Marlow converted their second short corner (2 from 2). The game went quiet in terms of goals and with 10 minutes to go it was 4-4 and we were probably playing our worst hockey of the game. However a neat run down the left by Dom (I think) created a an overlap and Robbie finished at the far post. At 5-4 Marlow's heads dropped a little although then Ed beat a couple of players and the goalkeeper and then from about 3 yards contrived to slot it past the far post claiming it was all a bit of a blur in front of him. Our resident Aussie advised Ed that he was too nice and that next time he should "tilt the stick" and smash it at the goal and if someone wants to try and stand in the way, well so be it. As Marlow flagged Andy added another finish on the second attempt and Ed coolly slotted a much more difficult chance, as we ran out 7-4 winners. As always against Marlow an open game of hockey, always competitive and a little feisty but enjoyable to play in.

Well played guys and looking forward to next week.

Thanks to those that came out for the team curry and to Jasper for organising it. Lawrence adopted the pregaming (I had to look it up) solution to the night out as all students do, although I am not sure he has mastered the specific quantities required for lucid conversation. I hope you all made it back safely!

Thanks to Tim and Dave for umpiring.
