It was a foggy start to our match against Gerrards Cross Ladies’ 1s, which was featuring 3 benching players from the 5s due to half-term availability. Skipper, Catherine Taylor, won the toss but gave the pushback to the away team to avoid the first pass confusion of last week (and to ensure we weren’t playing into the sun if the fog cleared in the second half). We started tentatively and keeper, Evelyn Hargraves, was soon called upon to deal with a loose ball in the ‘D’, she calmly booted it out to the left and we resumed our pressure against Gerrards Cross. We picked up our game and played a lot down the left where we repeatedly ran into trouble trying to get the ball into the ‘D’. Their fullback had a colossal hit and each time they won the ball they would power it back into our half. We finally managed to find some space on the right of the pitch, a quick switch enabled Sophie T to release the ball early to Sandra who took the ball to the back line and pulled it back to Caz Batten who calmly put the goal away! 1-0 Hawks. The second goal came in a similar fashion and we went into the half time break 2 goals ahead, full of anticipation of more goals to come.
And did they come!
The second half saw some fantastic flowing play with great movement on the left between MOM Emily Taylor and Olivia Strickland impressing in her debut game. Megan Hope and Millie Browne linked up well on the right, driving the ball up the pitch and finding the forwards. Sandra and Phoebe positioned well holding the width and height and were rewarded with a goal a piece. Emma Milne and Sophie Temminghoff worked tirelessly and repeatedly relieved the opposition of the ball. Caz had great composure in the 'D' and was rewarded with a goal and a short-corner. Shame she wasn't quite as focused during the short corner! ;-)
The defence, Phil Williams, Becky Brodie, Caroline Baggs, Vicky Easton and Megan Hope held strong. Gerrards Cross threatened on occasion with their fast forwards and penetrating balls, but we kept them out with our tight marking called by Evelyn. We didn't even concede a short corner!
A thoroughly solid performance by a cohesive team. The opposition's umpire complemented us on a great team performance. Hopefully we can deliver more of the same in our top table clash against Witney next week....
