On Sunday Hawks travelled to face Premier League leaders Surbiton in the quarter finals of the National Cup. Keen to put Saturday’s performance behind them, they reacted brilliantly to the challenge in front of them, and played some outstanding hockey throughout, with Hie Sawyer almost taking the lead in the first minute; her strike going narrowly wide. Surbiton created a number of chances of their own, but heroic defending from the whole squad, especially Ria Male in goal, and Sophie Carter in the back line, meant the away side was able to repel everything Surbiton threw at them. Just on the stroke of half time, Hawks lost Lucy Stewart with a nasty arm injury, but they responded well and continued the fine performance after the break. However Surbiton eventually took the lead, with former Hawks player Sandra Frankland finishing well after a good move down the right. Surbiton doubled their lead moments from the end to leave the score 2-0, but it was a performance Hawks can look back on with pride, as they build for their next league game against Olton.
