A slightly changed side from recent times welcomed Ed Baldock, Nathan Monk and a returning Stephen Hudson. Slough were in the lower half of the table, turned up 10 minutes before pushback and with only 10, so it was vital to not be complacent. We started well with Jasper scoring from the top of the circle with a trademark finish, before they were able to have 11 on the pitch. Neil squeezed one through the keeper and Ed evaded 3 or 4 tackles before slotting it past the keeper. So 3-0 up and playing some good patient hockey, moving the ball around. Slough then cleared a deflected shot off the line with their "stick" and we slipped up at the back towards the end of the first half, concededing our first goal for a couple of games and went in at half time 3-1 to the good.
So as always the next goal would be vital and with Slough looking dangerous on the break we needed to make sure we didn't concede. Nathan and Ben controlled things in the middle at the back and combined with an experienced midfield quartet we rarely looked in trouble. It did however take us until 15 minutes from the end to score again when Ed managed to almost directly repeat his first half effort, Nathan hit a screamer past the keepers ear and Boots finally finished one of the many short corners we had in the second half. We had a lot of chances and on another day could have scored more, but lets save those for when we need them.
We have some crucial matches coming up and we need to continue to play as we have been and up the tempo when required.
Thanks to the umpires, Tim and Dave and to Slough for participating in what was a generally a game played in the right spirit.
Man of the match: Many good performances but for his general play, goals and consistency over many weeks it goes to Jasper. He is also my legs on the left, curry organiser and team player.
