Dunners returns to lead Mens 6's to promised land..well, nearly..

07 February 2015, 13:30, Banbury Road North (Near)

Men's 6s 2 - 2 Ealing Lions Men's 1s

"I enjoyed reliving my childhood having Captain Mainwaring and Corporal Jones at the back, Private Pike at left back and Private Godfrey at Right Back. We're all doomed...!!"

Big Dog's less than complimentary email saying how much he had enjoyed being thrashed by South Bucks last week.

Well this week, we went for youth by promotion for Dunners - could he right the wrong the last time he took for the field for the Men's 6s against the league leaders?? - ( an 8-1 thrashing...)

We also had some real youth this week in another out field outing for Archie Spittles and Tommy Dawes.

With Big Dog and LAwrence McCabe sporting the whistles, the game started off at a high tempo, with both teams forcing shorts and possession pretty even, The Ealing Lions started to get fracious as the Hawks team were more than their equal, and half time came and it was 0-0. With Dunners slightly confusing the team at half time by actually talking about hockey, (Skipper couldn't help thinking old dogs- new tricks??) the etam came out refreshed..

Dunleavy and NArwaz combined well in the middle, and the younger legs of DAwes and Spittles jnr made sure that the superior stick skills of the EAling team were well shepherded away from danger. With Mad Dog Jones at the back, there was never a lack of physicality, although there was one occasion when it seemed Steve thought he was still at the Millenium and it was George North in front of him rather than a hockey player...

Still, we went one down to a clever short, and Skipper Spittles (by this time retired to the bench) thought the collapse would come, but after Dunners cleverly lost possession at a Hawks short, Affie Nawaz got the ball, silkily slipped past the second runner and calmly dispatched the ball past the Ealing keeper. the play was getting stretched - as were a few tempers, VAn Missie (who had just missed a difficult but clear opportunity) then tackled an Ealing defender with the force (but alas, not the accuracy) of a manic gladiator and was kindly dealt with by Dig Dog with a green. Mike image also saw Green with a clever push of the ball away when there were no numbers back, but the Ealing side were getting frustrated with not getting things their way and they too, justifiably got a green and a yellow.....

In between they got another goal, but the HAwks team still believed, and the equaliser came with VAn Persie remembering that the stick had to actually connect with the ball to score, and then it could have gone any way.....

Brilliant result, Dunners was MoM, but everyone contributed. Affie was a close second with his best performance yet, and as ever, the tireless Ashley got some mentions in dispatches, as should Alan Duncan and Mike Image who worked their socks off....

Next week Wycombe away, and all to play for (well, mid season mediocrity..but that's better than the drop!)
