Saturday 7th February, we travelled, (in Gail's very clean car!!), to Thame. Having not played for two weeks and having Mrs H back, supporting a very nice tan, the whole team was itching to get onto the pitch, so keen that we even started with a warm-up!
So the game started, A fantastic long ball from Wendy was picked up by Dette, who proceeded to run out to the right and slot the ball into the left side of the goal, as normal Dette was first to score after only a few minutes! Mel T then took the lead and took it upon herself to dribble round the Thame defenders to push one past the keeper in the far left corner. Despite some great tackling by Mrs H and good saves by Purdy, Thame were awarded a short corner, this took us to extra time, they went on to make the score 2-1 leading into half time.
With some wise words from Captain Becky at half time, and a particularly unhappy Purdy, with her first goal of the whole season...we pushed on with the second half. With just 13 players and no space for injuries, Jessica falls over. Jessica as usual had been playing well, with lots of fancy skills and often out witting her opponents. It wasn't long before Mel T took to the stage again and with a cracking strike from the top of the D off the back foot, hits to the corner to make the score 3-1. But Thame were determined not to be defeated by 9 goals again, with a big attack forward to the Hawks D, and lots of shots on goal, Jan took her chance to use a Deborah inspired skill, of stopping the ball on the goal line behind the keeper! With the ball back down the Thame end, Hawks were awarded a short. Captain Becky stood at the top waiting to receive the ball. And yes! A super strike hit the backboard! Goal disallowed. Due to uncertainty of whether the ball left the D, the goal was disallowed. Hawks bounced back and went on to score a 4th goal, intercepted by Gail, beautifully crossed by Dette and slotted in the goal by Rachael. As normal Deborah held up the back all game and displayed some class hockey. As well as Kate making her debut and playing some brilliant hockey and making some fab tackles. Thame then got awarded another short in extra time, making the final score 4-2.
Man of the match went to Sarah, who had a very good game, making lots of positive runs down the right wing and making consistently good passes to space.
Thank you also to Chris Hutton for umpiring.
