Mens 6's win the stats game but lose the match v South Bucks 1's

31 January 2015, 12:00

Men's 6s 1 - 7 South Bucks Men's 1s

It was always a struggle getting sides out this week, and so the valiant Mens 6's travelled to Slough with a limited squad of 11.

The phone call came immediately after the team had been posted on Friday...KP Lookalike was spluttering at the other end of the phone "what Skip, no subs??!! I haven't played a full game for 12 years..." and after he had turned up after an obviously heavy night with his fellow shooters we knew that lookalike's brother was likely to be slightly absent on pitch.

Still, he tried - sometimes with energy! A goal down after 2 minutes from a clever flick into the top right, had Big Dog (after looking for anyone to tackle the opposition) realising that he probably should have stayed in his dressing gown that morning.

He had been warned that it would be a busy day between the sticks, and as he pondered afterwards, it wasn't surprising with an aggregate age of 250 for the back 5......

We were 3 nil down at half time, and that had been after Al, inspired by Shirley, had decided to look for his OLA  (one legged Al) lookalike after a hefty blow to his ankle.....and had been off for 20 minutes...still, the HAwks team had played some good hockey with Jonny Atkins and Adrian Higgins having most of the play in the middle of the park, we just lacked that oomph up front.....

Big Dog meanwhile, had realised that this "young defence" needed some  strategic help, and dispatched the younger Sam Raynor onto the cocky 20 year old forward, and Kevin Clarke onto the cack handed other one... this actually worked and for 10 minutes, the Hawks team kept them at bay until we then gifted CH a goal and then the wind that was left dissapated....

Whilst consoling one another in the bar afterwards, it was heartening to have a bit of a laugh, especially at the "trendy" attire of the Goal keeping fraternity (messrs Humphries and Atkins), and if nothing else, down at the bottom of the food chain, we do enjoy ouselves even if we lose...Oh,   we lost 7-1 and Van Missie got the goal!

South Bucks were 2nd in the table, and next week we have Ealing Lions who are top.

Hopefully we will have a few "lions" back, as well as some decent umpires, so onwards and upwards...

Man of match Ashley Robbins (again!) with mentions for Big Dog, Jonny and the Chair!
