Hawks came out on top for their first match under player / coach Kieran Roche who has taken over the reins from Danny Newcombe.
Hawks started brightly and had a great chance to go into the lead after 5 minutes. With the Purley defence breached, a 2 v 1 with the keeper resulted with Chris Hardy kicking the ball. The game was ebb and flow with neither side stamping any authority, Hawks had the better chances, Purley enjoyed some possession, failing to bring keeper Hargraves into the game.
Half time Hawks 0 Purley 0
The second half followed the same pattern. Ben Wilson could have opened his account, eventually firing the ball into the side netting. With neither side looking dangerous Hawks fortuitously took the lead. From a short corner Jack Biggs fired a drag in at chest height, a defender on the line swept the ball to square leg hitting the umpire who was just standing inside the base line. Quick thinking Kit Cutter picked up the deflection off the umpire and pushed the ball into the goal. Within five minutes Phil Hargraves was deemed to have tripped a Purley attacker. .Thankfully the penalty flick was pulled wide. The game was played out for a 1 : 0 win to Hawks. Not a classic but three points in the bag.
