A very wintery start to the day had us all guessing whether Captain Becky would decide whether to confirm the match or not. But sub- zero temperatures, the odd snow flurry and driving rain did little to dampen her spirits. At 9.10am, made of sterner stuff Mrs M-W (AKA known as Captain Becky) deemed the match was on and we all duly arrived, including the Slough ladies who had battled their way through some difficult conditions!!!
With a previous 5-0 win in October 2014, there were high expectations driving the end result and the team rose to occasion amid the puddles of the canal side pitch at Teddies. An early, first goal by Sandra, fresh back from injury and on fine form, showed the Opposition what we were made of and started to set the tone for the rest of the match!
Despite several corners awarded against us, Slough failed to equalise and we went into half time in the lead with a clear idea of what we had to do.
The second half saw Hawks’ ladies up their game. The goals started to fly with a wonderful goal set up by Maddie dribbling from the half way line and put into the net by Dette. Another goal was set up by Rachel and shot into the goal by Linda. Slough did try to come back but the Hawks defence was too strong and the midfield let very little through. One opportunity by Slough saw a short corner shot saved by Deborah from behind the goalie.
Hawks continued to apply pressure and pace, by the now the sun was shining and the pitch free from puddles to enable a much faster game. Domination in the midfield enabled Rachel to push a goal past the goalie and into the corner of the goal to take the score to 4-0. Wendy Sobey back from several months of injury was hit by the ball hard on her ankle bone and was forced to retreat to the side-lines. With just minutes to go, Sandra continued to attack in the Slough goal and from a wonderful piece of passing work by Captain Becky, achieved a goal to take the score to 5-0.
Well done to all players who turned out in the cold conditions and rose to the occasion to keep our excellent record!
