Ladies 6's travelled to Newbury for the first match of the second round, postponed due to frost. With 13 players, including an injured Gk and a very poorly Captain. We had to do our best against an extremely large ,young squad at Newbury.
Hawks started strongly, dominating the game, but Newbury were fighting hard so there was no room for complacency. Our midfield players worked extremely hard to intercept and carry the ball back into our attacking D on many occasions. We were eventually rewarded with a short corner, which we converted into a goal. A lovely strike from Rachel Potter ,was deflected by a defender but luckily bounced over the keepers foot and hit the back board.
1-0 up at half time but no time to relax.Newbury came back determined to put us under pressure, and before long we were defending a short corner. We defended well but Purdy carrying a nasty calf injury was unable to continue so the decision was made to play 11 outfield with a very brave "kicking back"AKA Deborah. Within minutes of Purdy leaving the pitch they scored a runaway goal with a strike into the top, back of the net that neither Deborah or Jan were able to defend. All equal at 1-1. Instructions from Captain Becky were to "keep it down the other end!" With minutes to go, all of the play was in Hawks attacking half and a short corner was eventually awarded. A lovely strike from Rachel, was unfortunately disallowed, deemed too high. We fought on, but Newbury defended well and the game ended with a 1-1 draw.
MoM was awarded to Jessica Madden-Waite who worked tirelessly which great stick skills, intercepting and returning the ball to our forwards on many occasions, well done Jessica!
